Trendsetters

While Greenpeace delivered most discount chains a damning indictment concerning the use of toxic chemicals within the framework of its Detox campaign initiated in 2011, an interim balance published recently proves that some have started to support clean production and ban harmful chemicals such as plasticizers or perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals from their production processes. In particular, Aldi, Lidl, Rewe/Penny, Tchibo and the Swiss Coop chain have been praised by Greenpeace as trendsetters. These companies have not only successfully committed to detoxification but are also working on return and recycling programs.

Bio versus migration out of packaging materials

Organic is on demand. Organic products are attracting increasing interest and their turnover is growing. Annual turnover in Germany (excluding out-of-home consumption) - only a slim 2.1 billion euros at the start of the millennium - had already reached 7.91 billion euros by 2014 (source: Statista). When calculated as per capita turnover this only comes to a modest 100 euros per person but it still exceeds the average rate of consumption for all Europeans, which amounts to just 45 euros per person. Consumption is higher in Switzerland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Austria and Sweden, where people spend between 210 euros (Switzerland) and 110 euros (Sweden) per year on organic products.
