Innovative ideas for collection

"We make ideas work" - a motto that is not just theory for ACTEGA Terra. In regular intervals we send innovative printing samples to our customers and partners, providing suggestions for new coating opportunities and effects. The used coatings are explained in more detail by means of product characteristics, product advantages and product applications.

The TERRA LACKE innovation folder avoids the loss of any printing sample. Divided into the three product lines water based coatings, UV varnishes and effect coatings, the folder provides a clearly arranged filling and invites the addressee to collect the samples. The result: an innovation folder full of new ideas.

The TERRAFLEX-F Barrier Coating G 11/128 MVTR

Many products, for example detergents, foodstuff or papers, must be protected against humidity. Water and water vapour strongly influence the quality of the packaging and the filling goods. By coating the substrates, a barrier against water and water vapour is achieved.

The TERRAFLEX-F Barrier Coating G 11/128 MVTR protects the product. An examination of the Moisture-Vapor-Transmission-Rate, for short MVTR, shows the water vapour permeability of the used substrates in g/m² within a defined time period on extreme climatical conditions. Dependent on substrate and film weight, the TERRAFLEX-F Barrier Coating G 11/128 MVTR reduces the water vapour permeability demonstrably.

A special characteristic of the TERRAFLEX-F Barrier Coating G 11/128 MVTR: this product foregoes solvents and is water based. What distinguishes this product is the fast drying, a high rub and scuff resistance as well as a glossy surface. On dry printing ink the TERRAFLEX-F Barrier Coating G 11/128 MVTR can be used in flexo and gravure printing as well as on a coating machine.

TERRA LACKE at the Blister Symposium

With ACTEGA Terra as one of the symposium partners, last year's MM Karton Symposium took place at the company Adolf Illig Maschinenbau in Heilbronn. On the 7th and 8th of November, more than 100 visitors were informed about the production of blister cards and their processing in blister packaging. Both practical demonstrations as well as interesting speeches were part of the overall programme.

Experts, coming from the different fields of coatings, carton, presses and blister machines, discussed the various aspects of blister packaging over the whole process chain. Frank Kamphuis, Head of Lab Waterbased Coatings of ACTEGA Terra, talked about the characteristics of blister coatings and provided valuable recommendations on the coating's processing. As an example, the TERRAWET Blister Coating G 9/415 was presented, a product often used in practice.

Migrationless coatings for the printing industry

In the printing industry, requirements for an effective limit of material migration between packaging material and filling good are nothing fundamentally new. Especially materials and articles that are in direct or indirect contact to foodstuffs, are affected. Thus, a binding, specified limit for the total migration of 10 mg/dm² or converted 60 mg/kg filling (60 ppm) was already defined in the Commodities Ordinance (Bedarfsgegenständeverordung (BGV, 1997)).

Up to the present day, a series of ordinances have referred to this limit. Furthermore, additional requirements in the form of specific migration
limits (limits for individual material migration) are formulated here. Ultimately, the packaging material as a whole and its components have to fulfill the required limits for total migration and specific migration. This also includes coatings.

The ACTEGA Terra water based coatings already satisfy the above mentioned requirements. Also in the area of UV coatings, innovative products have been developed: the TERRAGLOSS UV Special Coating G 8/155, the TERRAGLOSS UV Special Coating G 8/242 and the TERRAGLOSS UV Special Coating G 8/282. The new TERRAWET Playing Card Coating G 9/312

Whether in the internet, on TV, at home, in the casino or in the new James Bond movie "Casino Royale", poker has become very popular. The bottom line for the playability of the cards - and therefore for the playing pleasure - is the coating.

The TERRAWET Playing Card Coating G 9/312 is characterized by an excellent fan and playability. By means of its excellent surface smoothness, it is suitable for the application on casino cards. Additionally, it is resistant against hand perspiration and fat, and it provides a very good scratch and scuff resistance. The coating retains its excellent playability characteristics even in very humid conditions.

The TERRAWET Playing Card Coating G 9/312 can be processed inline and offline on conventional and UV based printing inks. The ACTEGA Terra portfolio contains further water and UV based coatings especially for playing cards (e.g. for perfecting machines).

Terra Lacke, Kelstar and Rad-Cure

Recently, ACTEGA Terra has been joined by two sister companies. By means of these acquisitions, a strong alliance has been formed between ACTEGA Terra and the firms Kelstar and Rad-Cure. Both companies concentrate 100% on the printing industry and focus their main activities on the North American market.

Kelstar, situated near Philadelphia, is one of the leading companies for water and UV based overprint varnishes on the American continent. The product offer is amended by fountain solutions. The company Rad-Cure, close to New York, is a highly innovative specialist for UV based varnishes in the area of narrow web. A broad product palette of special applications and security solutions complement the offer.
