Migration in Waterbased Coatings

It is to be expected that, in the future, additional or advanced requirements of lawgivers on the national and EU level will affect nearly all materials and articles that are in direct or indirect contact to dry, moist and fatty foodstuffs. Especially the traceability and the conformity of the products in the total supply chain and the material migration - material transfer between packaging material and filling - are in the focus of the interest.

Limits for the total migration (10 mg/dm2 or 60 mg/kg filling) or specific migration limits (limits for individual material migration 0,01 - 60 ppm) already exist or will be defined in near future. Ultimately, the packaging material as a whole - i.e., all layers, as well as the coating - will have to fulfill the required limits given by LFGB (replaces LMBG), BG and 2002/72/EG.

The TERRAWET waterbased coatings satisfy these requirements today. The global migration potential of the TERRAWET waterbased coatings that was measured shows a measurement value that is in 1/1000 of the standard to be met in relation to the required total migration limit (60 ppm). The use of our migrationless coatings will enable our customers to easily attain conformity to actual and pending laws, ordinances, directives and recommendations for direct and indirect foodstuffs contact.
