Pearlescent coatings

Pearlescent coatings provide printed products with an elegant and high grade surface. In order to achieve this they make use of the phenomenon of light refraction.

Pearlescent pigments consist of a structure of transparent layers with different refractive indices. The different optical wavelengths are amplified or absorbed dependent on the thickness of the pigment lamina. Therefore the coating shimmers in the defined color only and not over the whole color spectrum.

Coatings are the ideal medium for the application of pearlescent effects. You achieve very good results with high edge definition by using TerraEffekt pearlescent coatings out of the coating unit. Pearlescent coatings can be applied over the full surface or spot for a defined finishing.

According to selected colour, pigment size (fine, medium or coarse) and pigment type you achieve different effects. Pearlescent coatings can be employed not only from the coating unit after printing but also out of the coating unit before printing for a more elegant shimmer. Special pearlescent coatings with very good printability have been developed for this objective. The TerraEffekt program offers pearlescent coatings based both on water and UV.
