Low migration coatings
One of the main tasks of packaging is to protect the contents against environmental impacts and contamination. Simultaneously,
the filled goods must be protected against influences from the packaging itself. A migration – which means a transition of material
from the packaging into the food – is to be absolutely avoided.
Migration can have two causes. As well as the direct transition of
materials from the packaging into the filled goods, migration can
result from a set-off effect. In this case, component parts of the
printed and coated front side transfer to the blank rear side of
the packaging, and, under certain circumstances, migrate from
there into the filled goods.
TerraWet waterbased coatings are classified as low migration
due to their advanced formulation. A wide spectrum of more
than 50 waterbased coatings for different operational purposes
has been certified and authorized by accredited testing laboratories
for direct and/or indirect contact with foodstuffs.
The global migration of selected TerraWet waterbased coatings
in this case has a value under a tenth of the upper limit of
10 mg/dm2 and is thus vanishingly small. The specific migration
with reference to relevant components falls significantly below
the existing limit values.
